Lakeside Serenity: A Modern Masterpiece on Bolgoda Lake

By Charted Architect Kumudu S. Munasinghe

Sri Lankan architecture

Nestled on the tranquil shores of Bolgoda Lake, Cube House stands as a testament to contemporary lakeside living. Its pristine, minimalist design sets it apart, making it a striking modern contrast to the surrounding lush greenery. This architectural marvel, designed as a rectangular cube, strategically utilizes its positioning and orientation to maximize panoramic views across the serene lake, immersing its inhabitants in a continuous interplay of natural vistas and shifting light.

Embracing Simplicity and Functionality

The architectural concept of Cube House prioritizes simplicity and clarity. It employs a restrained material palette to emphasize both functionality and aesthetic appeal. Constructed from a combination of reinforced concrete and bricks, the materials were chosen for their durability and thermal properties, significantly enhancing the building's energy efficiency. The robust, rustic plaster finish complements these materials, blending harmoniously with the rugged natural surroundings.

Seamless Integration with Nature

One of the most striking features of Cube House is its extensive use of glass. Large windows and glass panels frame breathtaking views from every room, creating a seamless interaction between indoor spaces and the natural world outside. This architectural strategy floods the interiors with natural light, facilitating a constant dialogue with the lake and the sky. As the day progresses from dawn to dusk, the house changes, reflecting the evolving hues and moods of the natural environment.

Elevated Living Spaces

The building’s raised foundation lifts the living spaces, offering an elevated perspective that captures wide, uninterrupted views of the lake. This elevation is not only functional but also serves as a vantage point, placing nature at the forefront of the daily experience for its residents. The simple geometric form of the cube interacts dynamically with light, glittering in the morning sun, receding into a quiet retreat under the harsh noon rays, and casting long shadows that create a soft, inviting ambiance in the evening.

Sustainable and Comfortable Design

Thermally, Cube House benefits from the substantial mass of its construction materials, maintaining a comfortable indoor climate year-round. This design aspect ensures physical comfort and demonstrates a commitment to sustainability by reducing the need for artificial heating and cooling. The house’s ability to regulate its internal temperature naturally speaks to an environmentally conscious design philosophy.

WA Awards

Global Recognition

In recognition of its excellence in space-making, Cube House received the World Architecture Community (WA) award in its 10th cycle in April 2011. This accolade underscores its global acceptance and acknowledgment as a universal specimen of contextually responsive architecture. The Cube House is celebrated not only for its aesthetic and functional design but also for its ability to harmonize with its natural surroundings, making it a true architectural gem on Bolgoda Lake.
